Modern Wardrobe Essentials
Build a women’s or men’s capsule wardrobe around your real week: a jacket with ease, a clean trouser, a good shirt and a knit that brings them together.
The styling idea
01
Think of a Milan working morning that becomes an unplanned dinner. A clear shoulder gives authority; a fluid trouser keeps the mood relaxed. Start with ink navy and ivory, then add espresso or oxblood if those colours already belong in your wardrobe. A capsule succeeds when its pieces are worn together, not when it reaches a prescribed number.
The wardrobe
02
Women: the softly shaped jacket
Look for a single-breasted wool jacket with a lightly defined waist and room through the upper arm. A hip-skimming length works neatly with a straight trouser; a shorter jacket can clarify the waist above a fuller leg. Compare Giorgio Armani, Max Mara and Brunello Cucinelli as designer directions.
Women: the straight trouser
Choose wool crepe or a substantial cotton weave in charcoal or navy, with a waistband that stays comfortable when seated. Compare Max Mara, The Row and Giorgio Armani. A higher rise can lengthen the visible leg line; a mid-rise may feel better on a shorter torso. Keep the pocket opening flat rather than pulling.
Women: the shirt or soft blouse
An ivory cotton-poplin shirt brings crispness; a silk-crepe blouse offers a softer transition into evening. Compare Brunello Cucinelli, Max Mara and Saint Laurent. Check opacity over your intended underlayer and enough room across the bust without relying on a hidden pin to correct persistent strain.
Men: the jacket and knit combination
Choose a softly structured navy wool jacket and a fine-gauge crewneck in stone or charcoal. Compare Giorgio Armani, Zegna and Brunello Cucinelli for the jacket; Loro Piana, Zegna and Brunello Cucinelli for the knit. Keep enough space for the sleeve and armhole to move together.
How do proportion and colour shape the choice?
On a petite frame, compare jacket length with the trouser rise before shortening everything. A tall frame may need additional sleeve and rise length, not simply a larger size. For a fuller bust or hip, fit that area first and ask whether the waist can be adjusted. Winter-inspired palettes can use ink and cool white; summer-inspired palettes favour soft navy and pearl. Autumn-inspired wardrobes can use olive and cream; spring-inspired wardrobes can use warm ivory with a clear accent. These are colour ideas, not diagnoses.

Finishing details
Women’s formula: ivory shirt, navy straight trouser, softly shaped jacket, leather loafer and a medium shoulder bag. Men’s formula: charcoal knit, navy jacket, straight trouser and a polished loafer. Compare Ferragamo, Tod’s and Gucci for footwear; Bottega Veneta, Loewe and Ferragamo for bags. One ring or a quiet watch is enough. A clean hair parting or a softly gathered style lets the collar remain visible; choose makeup in the finish you already enjoy.
The fitting rehearsal
04
At the fitting, wear the shoes and underlayers that will accompany the outfit. Pin the trouser hem so it clears the floor while walking; choose a clean or slight break according to leg width. Check the jacket shoulder before discussing waist suppression. Sleeve alterations depend on cuff construction and buttonholes. Press only as the care label permits, and protect delicate surfaces with the method recommended by the maker. Take front, side and seated photographs to judge the complete proportion.

What should you buy first for a capsule wardrobe?
Start with the piece missing from outfits you already wear. Lay out a working day, a relaxed day and an evening using your own clothes. If one layer or pair of shoes connects all three, investigate that gap first. Keep a favourite colour or print in the mix; a capsule need not be entirely neutral.
